Tetanus is a serious infection caused by a pathogenic bacteria, Clostridium tetani. The earlier the patient is diagnosed, the more effective tetanus treatment be.
Clostridium tetani and tetanus:
Clostridium tetani is a rod-shaped pathogenic bacteria, that causes tetanus. Tetanus is a condition of stiff and rigid muscles. If you get some cut or wound on your body, this bacteria deposits and interferes with nerves that control the muscles movements. In this condition, muscles movement becomes difficult.
The infection is dangerous if left untreated. It causes some serious complications that can even lead to death.
If you develop the below symptoms, you should go to the doctor as soon as possible.
Symptoms of tetanus:
Tetanus symptoms appear when the bacteria infects the skeletal muscles nerves. The symptoms can take 7-10 days. The initial symptoms may be a headache, diarrhea and muscle pain.
The appearance of symptoms depends upon the incubation period. Incubation period means the period between the entry of parasite and the appearance of the symptoms of the infection. The shorter the incubation period, the stronger the symptoms will be.
The symptoms of tetanus includes:
- Muscles stiffness and rigid jaw, which can become a lock.
- feeling trouble in swallowing something
- sweating and fever
- Restlessness and irritability
- high blood pressure and rapid heart beat
- Muscles spasm slowly spread toward the neck.
If you receive cut or wound on the body, you should clean it thoroughly. Clostridium tetani are present in soil, dust and animal feces. Then, you should go to see a doctor to have the vaccine.
If tetanus prone wound is too large then, your doctor may go for surgery. He would remove the infected muscle. The process is called debridement. (Act of removing dead or contaminated tissues)
The person with tetanus may need high-quality special nutrition because of high muscles activity.
Some patient may need ventilator if they feel difficulty in breathing.
Possible complications of tetanus:
The following complications are possible:
- Bone fracture
- Aspiration pneumonia
- Pulmonary embolism
- Kidney failure
